Travis Brouty picked up a camera while studying Liberal Arts and Studio Art at Houghton College in Upstate New York and immediately discovered a love for the photo image. Through photography Travis found an appreciation and a perspective in objects, places, and people that his studies in drawing, painting, and printmaking helped serve to hone. His studies abroad in French culture, language and art history at the American Institute for Foreign Study in Cannes, France, also gave him an opportunity to explore his flaneurism in film imaging.
Following college, Travis experimented with photography while pursuing advanced studies at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Pittsburgh Filmmakers (Pennsylvania). Here, he combined photography with mixed media to create new imagery applying new processes and resulting in several group and solo exhibitions. His work Earned distinction from the International Photographer’s Form Spring Competitions, with his work published in the Photographer’s Forum Annuals (1997, 2003, and 2005).
Travis is a resident of New York City, where his camera is his constant companion and the city and its environs are his compelling subject. Brouty had his New York gallery debut at Gallery 216 (2004) which displayed work in a group showcase of emerging talent. He also contributed to a published volume, Process (C-Loop Productions, 2004), which highlights new visual artists in the New York scene. Travis also exhibited his most recent Graffiti Series at Vlada Lounge (2007) with positive reviews.
Artist Statement‘I have always had the desire to take photographs with the idea that everything could be made more interesting through the camera. My goal is to reveal to others the living world in which they live and participate. Photography challenges our feelings, enriches our perception and deepens our appreciation for the world around us. My objective is to photograph simply, honestly and with an expression that invokes originality and uniqueness.'
